What Colors Can Represent in the Bible

Time in reflection through prayer and reading the Word of God is how you will hear the voice of God. Every dream we seek to understand must be brought before the Lord. No God-dream can be understood without the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:17

“He who answers a matter before he hears it, t is folly and shame to him.” Proverbs 18:13 NKJV

Many of the dreams we dream convey a spiritual lesson and can be understood in the same manner Jesus shared stories. Jesus taught several sermons using illustrations and parables. He followed up by explaining what the specific symbols in the parable represented. In Matthew 13 Jesus shared the story of the sower and the seed. The sower symbolized the farmer and the seed was the Word of God.

There are people who have prophetic dreams, however, the majority of those I’ve spoken to, their dreams are understood in the same manner Jesus explained his stories. They are like riddles and their images can be replaced to provide a spiritual, life lesson.

The Bible is our reference tool to understanding Truth. Whether it’s a message from a pastor, a Bible teacher, or from a dream or vision, the Bible is the source when trying to understand fragments in dreams. Don’t seek to understand a dream without scripture supporting a message you believe is from God.

If God is conveying a spiritual lesson in the night, the Holy Spirit will guide you to understanding through scripture. If scripture is set aside and not used to glean a message, the dream should be discarded and forgotten. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit is our guide. Acts 2:17

Symbols in dreams can represent a positive or negative message - good or bad. Colors are just one component in dreams that can help us obtain spiritual insight into understanding and following God’s will and can also have a positive or negative meaning the way most things in life can.

Take technology for example. Our global economy wouldn’t be operating as quickly and efficiently as it is without the internet. On the flip side, the internet is a digital haven for Satan to spread pornography.

When it comes to colors, the Bible doesn’t list every color. When this happens, I generally take a broader look at what the color represents. For example, see *orange.

There are scenes that play out in dreams similar to the sower and the seed and will have a universal message. My GPS Dream is an example. However, when listening for God’s voice in the night, our dreams are personal.

The objects you see are often triggered from your life experiences, your likes, and dislikes, as well as country of origin. Here are examples of how the color green may be interpreted in different countries around the world:

China: Green can represent spring and regeneration. If a man were wearing a green hat in a dream, it may represent his wife’s unfaithfulness.

Ireland: “The Emerald Isle.” An American who sees Irish green in a dream may think “good luck.”

Mexico: Independence.

United States: Green might represent a lush garden and new life (Garden of Eden). Rest and renewal (Psalm 23). Green for the graduate from Michigan State University (my husband’s college alma mater).

Get the idea?

Colors

  • Amber: Likeness of God; jewel (treasures of heaven, the word of God).  “This is what the Lord looked like” (Ezekiel 1:4, 27-28).

  • Black: Satan; death; demonic; darkness, sin, evil, mourning; detestable. “The earth will mourn and the heavens will be draped in black” (Jeremiah 4:28) Black vulture (Leviticus 11:13); Leviticus 19:31.

  • Blue: Health; royal and heavenly. God’s presence, a heavenly visitation; Numbers 4:5-7. “Across the entrance of the Most Holy Place he hung a curtain made of fine linen, decorated with blue, purple, and scarlet thread and embroidered with figures of cherubim” (2 Chronicles 3:14). “The blueness of a wound turns cleanses evil” (Proverbs 20:30 KJV). “Feeling blue.”

  • Gray: Uncertain; guessing; right vs. wrong; deception. Blind to sin and weak. “Don’t think black or white.” Crown of glory (“Gray hair is a crown of glory” Proverbs 16:30) Hosea 7:9 See black.

  • Green: New life; garden (Garden of Eden - Tree of Life and Tree of Good and Evil. Genesis 2). Cultivate; spiritual and physical rest and renewal (Psalm 23 and Hosea 14:8). Money; greed, envy.  Death” I looked up and saw a horse whose color was pale green. Its rider was named Death, and his companion was the Grave.” Revelation 6:8

  • *Orange: Fruit of the Spirit (something fresh and pleasant - Galatians 5:22-23). Fire (is orange). Purified. Protection (“fire by day”). “Baptize you with the Holy Spirit and Fire (Luke 3:16). Danger, warning (e.g., detour and construction signs). God is a consuming fire. “But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell” (Matthew 5:22).

  • Purple: Royalty; wealth; royal robes. Ruler (good - Christ or evil - Pharisees). “The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him” (John 19:2). Judges 8:26

  • Red: Blood of Jesus; sacrifice; purifying; war; strife. Leviticus 17:11; Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:20; Hebrews 9:21-22 “You must not build a temple to honor my name, for you are a warrior and have shed much blood'” (I Chronicles 28:3).

  • White: Holiness; royalty; throne; purity; righteousness; cleansed; Isaiah 1:18; Daniel 7:9.

  • Yellow: Sun; seed; nourishment. Unclean. “The manna looked like small coriander seeds, and it was pale yellow like gum resin.” Leviticus 11:7; Leviticus 13:30

Dream examples:

Seek the Lord and look for the “sower and the seed” lessons in your dreams. If there is a deeper meaning to your dream, through prayer, the Lord will reveal it to you.

“Wilderness and desert will sing joyously,
the badlands will celebrate and flower—
Like the crocus in spring, bursting into blossom,
a symphony of song and color.
Mountain glories of Lebanon—a gift.
    Awesome Carmel, stunning Sharon—gifts.
God’s resplendent glory, fully on display.
    God awesome, God majestic.”

Isaiah 35:1-2 MSG
